The City of Hendersonville is developing a citywide parks and greenspace plan that will offer a vision and roadmap for a park and greenspace system that serves all people in Hendersonville, with a focus on equity and resilience.

What is most important to you as the City plans for future parks and greenspaces? What opportunities should the City explore as it plans for the next 20 years? 100 years? Hearing from you will help make sure the final product is a community-driven plan. Visit this page throughout the process for project updates and opportunities to provide input.

What is the Parks and Greenspace Master Plan?

The City of Hendersonville is updating our Parks and Greenspace Master Plan. This plan will guide the Parks Department and distill the vision for future Parks, Greenways, and Greenspaces. It will prioritize the Parks Department’s funding and resources, review staffing, and determine where and what types of parks, greenspaces, and greenways will be needed in Hendersonville for the next 50 years. The original plan was produced and adopted by City Council in 2011. This update is currently underway and is expected to be adopted in summer 2024.

How can I help?

We need your input and opinions on how our parks and greenspaces should look and function in the future. You can fill out the survey here. You can also attend a public input meeting or stop by one of our tents and tables at various events. Please spread the word!

When will the plan take effect?

We anticipate the plan will be adopted in the Summer of 2024.

Will the plan include Greenways?

Yes!

Will the city start providing sports programming?

No, City Council has chosen to focus on providing parks, passive green space, greenways, facilities and amenities. The Henderson County Parks and Recreation Department does a fantastic job with organized leagues and the city does intend to duplicate programming at this time.

Will the Parks and Greenspace Master Plan become part of the 2045 Comprehensive plan?

Yes, it will likely be an appendix. The Gen H Comprehensive Plan has many components that are also related to parks and greenspace.

Is there a contractor leading the project?

Yes, DesignWorkshop is the consultant firm hired to lead this planning effort.

Does the city have a committee of community representatives to help guide the plan?

Yes, we have compiled a myriad of community leaders to represent different groups within the city. As an advisory group, and project ambassadors, members will provide guidance and high-level perspective throughout the life of the project on key themes, challenges and opportunities for the plan. The Committee will work collaboratively with the project team to review the community needs assessment and offer input and differing viewpoints on preliminary recommendations.

Who do I contact if I have questions about the plan?

You can contact Mark Stierwalt, Superintendent of Public Works (Building, Parks and Cemetery) at mstierwalt@hvlnc.gov 828-697-3084.
